PNS ZULFIQAR

SURFACE WARRIORSThe first PNS ZULFIQUAR was built in 1942 and commissioned as HMS DEVRON on 16 February 1943. She was commissioned as HIMS DHANUSH on 10 November 1945 and as HMPS ZULFIQUAR on 14th August 1947. In October, 1948 she was converted to a Survey Ship. In 1949 Commander (Late Captain PN) succeeded by Commander R A B Hunt RAN, who completed his term of service in 1955 and Commander S R Islam PN (Late Captain PN) was the first Pakistani officer who took over the command in 1955. The other officers who commanded the ship by end of December 1971 were Commander M Sarwar PN, Commander R A Kidwai PN, Commander Sultan Mohiyuddin PN, Captain S M Hamid & Commander S M Hussain.

PNS ZULFIQUAR bears the flag of efficiency by remaining afloat continuously for 41 years, where as all other ships of her class had been phased out in the fifties. She had the privilege to have flown Pakistan Navy Ensign on the day of Independence at a Foreign Port, in Mombasa. The tremendous achievements of the ship in the field of survey will continue shining as a star for many years to come and will remain a land mark in the history of PN.

The new PNS ZULFIQUAR (Ex HMS APPOLO - built in 1972) was commissioned in Pakistan Navy on 14 October 1988, and is an operational and efficient unit of 25th Destroyer Squadron and is serving as training ship.
